i'm wondering if there is an exemption for hay. lots of that in the dakotas. 10 ft wide and pays $1.10. most don't run with the lights. and some won't even have the signs and flags on.
i did see one load that actually paid $2.50. but was told permits for the 3 state 400 mile run would be $150. would have considered it. if it weren't for that fact i'd have to bounce over 500 miles to get something that paid more then $1.
Tricks to getting more $$$ a mile ?? *Step Deck*

Find a company or two in your area that needs a go to guy and haul for them. You get better money when they know you can be counted on.
I haul for Sierra Pines, don't leave Ga or Fl. -
ding ding ding, ladies and gentlemen we have a winner! Brokered trucks fall off loads all the time and you can be the bull pen. BUT, you need to keep yourself available. Hard to be available if you're running all over the country for pennies.Last edited: Nov 12, 2013

The biggest problem with cheap freight is the mega carriers will bid it cheap because the number of trucks they have one can haul cheap and 10 more hauling decent can make up for the loss of that one truck and they still turn a profit. Then a number of O/O's except this as the new norm because they think going cheaper is the only way to stay competitive with big mega carriers. If you actually find a shipper that believes in the small business working man and are good people and doing good themselves and not complete greedy ###', they won't mind paying a little extra to a small time single truck working man trying to make an honest living rather than feeding mega carriers who are in competition for slowly monopolizing the trucking industry by driving out O/O's and buying almost everything that comes up for sale which Swift has done and even got in some serious trouble for about 10 years or so ago but eventually it'll happen. Those small business' that take pride in keeping the working man working and opting out of big corporate BS are few and far between and rare these days.
peterbilt_2005 Thanks this. -
As far as Van and Reefer freight I believe that. I don't see that as much in open deck market. I'm not hauling the same freight as the "megas" either. So I may never see itSkunk_Truck_2590, kachup, MJ1657 and 1 other person Thank this.

I have to disagree with you. No one pays more to support small business. The only way you get paid more is to provide greater value. Be there when you say, secure properly, go out of your way to solve their issues, etc. Pick one of these angles. If you can't offer them anything other than what the megas do, why would they pay you more?passingthru69, rollin coal and TripleSix Thank this.

and if you think it's a lie put some money on it because I can back it up!! I get some stuff that pays better than that, Thursday I load in Houston going to New Orleans for $1,700 legal stepdeck load no tarp only kicker is I load at 4am because the place closes at 2:30 so load and go!
thats why I'm always ######## because I get good money outbound but when I get somewhere I'm pulling teeth to get $2/mi and I know brokers are getting more money. Today I did a orange,tx to Houston for $800 reloaded a broker load going to sulphur,la for $550 135 miles I drop it first thing in the morning than a lake Charles to Beaumont for $450 all I need is a load from there to Houston I can drop same day or I'll just bounce 85 miles there to load at 4:am
