A lot of states have provisions for overhanging the front of the trailer a certain tolerance if you can actually overhang the front it might not be illegal. But that's where you need to check your FOH and ROH in states that you are going through. That would be front over hanging rear over hang, and of course when doing over length loads total legth needs to be checked as well.

And in most States if you are overhanging but it is legally allowable overhang you just need to put flags on it. For the vast majority of cases you don't ever put on oversized signs on unless you are running under permit.

There are of course exceptions to this for instance and AG exempt load in the state of Illinois.

And sometimes even when running with permit you don't need to put the oversized signs on. I seem to recall the State of Arizona doesn't actually require you to throw a sign until after 9 ft wide, and there are many other examples of where you might even need to run under a permit but you don't need the signs, but this is why a good understanding of the regulations in the various states that you will be running a load in is an absolute necessity.

Also yes if you are not running under a permit you can follow your prepass.

Flagging requirements also vary by state

It varies a lot by state

I know guys that run the signs and lights in Tennessee because of the TN kingpin rule . And their RGN is six inches over the kingpin rule .

But you don’t want to use signs if they are not required .

If you have signs and DONT pull into the weigh station and walk your permit inside , (which you can’t do if you don’t have a permit ) they might chase you down .
As far as I know most of not all states require permitted loads to park and walk the permit inside .
Some scales of the operators are bored , will walk out to you and look at them so you don’t have to park .

if you require a permit , the permit and associates paperwork will have all the flag and sign and light requirements for that state

Got loaded today and worked on the legal side. The load had about 1.5' FOH and about 2' ROH and despite the overall length getting over 75' to around 77', only CT required a permit on the way PA-NJ-NY-CT-MA. NY was fine but I bought a $3 permit since I used the 287 Thruway. I got the overall process and this time decided to use my dispatch's service since it only was $90 for permits. Decided to save my time. Especially, since this was only one part of the story. The other part here:
Weight Distribution across a flatbed trailer?

    CAXPT and FerrissWheel Thank this.
