Simple minded fool that I am, I just drive all the hours I can, legally, until I get close or #### close to the reciever. If I'm waaaay early...."more's the better"! You can plan using 50/55/60 mph, but, bottom line,....GET THERE!
-
Oh I'm in the crete truck that just pulled out of the shop. I thought you asked if I was near the Sherman truck lol.
-
Thanks for the replies all!
I'm still not getting how you ensure that you will be there at a specific time..
Ex.
Going from Columbus, OH to Sacramento, CA.
Start
Columbus, OH - Tuesday 5:00pm
Destination
Miles: 2,339
Driving Time(at 50mph): 47 hours (46.78 rounded up)
Delivery Time: 1300(1:00pm) Friday
What would be the way to see if I can make it by 1:00pm Friday?
What & How do you calculate it? I mean every detail... -
...................Drive........Dot........Drive.....Dot
.Tuesday.....................................7...........
.Wednesday.....4...........10............10
.Thursday........1...........10............11.......2.
.Friday..........................8.............5
Total hours driving 38 hrs, 3 dot breaks for 30 hrs = 68 hours total
.
This assumes that you have 11 hours of driving time available after the 5pm pickup. To get there by 1pm Friday you would have to drive 2339 miles at an average speed of 61.5+ mph for all miles driven. This also assumes no time for fuel, meals or bathroom breaks. Unless I screwed up the math, ain't happening dude.
.
While the listed trip miles is 2339, a mileage of 2573 (2339 * 1.1) is more practical and that makes it even worse. Sorry -
Well, if you're planning on a 50 mph average 13:00 friday is not possible.
47 driving hours means 11 a day plus 3 on the 5th day. In an academic world if you averaged exactly 50 miles an hour and used no line 4 the earliest you could get there would be 87 hours after you left and you only have 68 hours from 15:00 tues to 13:00 fri.
In my world I could do it in 4 days of driving. With the 17:00 start time that would mean screwing up my sleep badly for the whole week so right away I get rid of that plan.
So now I have 44 driving hours plus 4 10 hour breaks. Now lets assume this is a 'sooner the better' load and I was willing to start a couple hours earlier each day and do minimal stops. I would give a conditional best case eta of 89 hours after leaving. That's a shorter day on Tues and includes an hour a day for pretrip/fuel/meal break etc.
So the best case realistic eta for me would be 10:00 Saturday or 08:00 local when you account for the time zones.
A time I would happily commit to would be 6 or 7 hours later depending on actual miles as the 2339 seems to be west side of columbus to east side of sacramento. -
My normal way is to divide by 60 and allow 2 hours each day for stopping. That'll keep you from being late.
That particular trip comes out to 47 hours just like yours. Just a different formula.
I have a funky formula for sliding axles too. But it works good.

The best way to figure it that i've found by being in a slow company truck is to figure that you will average 10 mph less than the actual top speed of your truck so a 60 mph truck averages 50 ( to be safe) so i then round your 2339 up to 2400 which is 48 drive time, divided by 11 provided you have the hours is 4 11 hour drive days plus a 4 hour drive day. now for every full day of 11 i allow for 3 hours of line 1 or 4 ( i dont always use the full 14 hour days but not knowing traffic or construction or accident i allow it for etd ) now when i arrive early i will drive to the closest truck stop or if say i arrive the night before and i know theres parking i'll go to consignee and wake up with a full 14/11 if my 70 allows.

Whew.. Can you say confusing?
Is there some nice laid out sheet, or something?
So. I've learned you(me) should calculate at 50mph to leave leeway for any hiccups..
TennMan, so how do you "allow" for the 3 hours? Do you just add 3 hours onto the overall trip time? Also, inside the 3 hours (is that what you leave for your pre-trip/post-trip + fueling)?
How do you guys say quickly on the qualcom that you can, or cannot take the load? I mean starting out.. it's probably going to take me like 30 minutes to figure out if I could even make the load on time or something. -
There is know way to ensure anything when it comes to trip planning,Alot of it comes from experience, everyone has there on way of doing it. there are to many variables to say for sure that you can plan out every day, every mile and every stop. The only for sure was is to leave as early as possible and keep running as hard as possible everyday. You never know when you are going to run into weather, road closure.......etc
