hey yankee tex, you got any pics of your setup? imo the tripac is way better. i have used both and ran into problems with the carrier's a/c and a few other issues. jmo.
by the way .contact Kenny at thermoking in springfield,mo he had some used units for sale and they couldn't be easier to install. you can even tie the vents into exsisting sleeper vents and get a/c all around .mine has no trouble cooling my 86" bunk and cab. good luck !
Cheap solution: for summer heat a $100, 5000 btu window unit in the passenger window works well. I used an Idle-Aire template, cut the round hole out to a rectangular hole to fit the window unit and used duct tape for the rounded gap at the top. If you have space below the bunk, the window unit can be stored there - it is as easy to set up as an Idle-Aire head was. This can be powered by: a small portable gas generator or by a ProHeat/Carrier APU whose A/C system has failed. Other power sources can be used since a 5000 btu unit is low power draw. This requires no hole-cutting on the truck and no permanent or intrusive changes. For the guy sitting at a trade show, just stick the window unit in, and run an extension cord into the facility if you can. Total cost to you for this is probably less than $175.00.
Carrier and TK cost about the same. Carrier's system isn't as good for a few reasons overall. TK is the better system IMHO. The deal-breakers on the Carrier units are that they generally are loud and the A/C system is not very good - even when it works. Tri Pak a/c ties into the truck's a/c and has its own compressor. The tri-pak unit is quiet.
seeking a system soon, I heard from a company driver that they have had about 175-200 of them installed in over 5 years in their trucks, first they went w/ Carrier , found that they had nothing but problems, now they have all Thermo king Units, swapped them all,175-200 of them) and have very few problems w/them. I have more research to do.... Carrier is owned by United Technologies, they own quite a few large company's, they are not in the APU business, they are a technology conglomerate... crusin
