Hi davenjeip, I've heard 17 degrees is the point of no return for a jackknife, which isn't much. There are many factors, wet-dry, ice or snow, loaded-empty. Generally, grabbing the trailer brake will lock the wheels, and the weight is going to pivot on the 5th wheel, actually pushing the tractor, making matters worse. On snow, when the trailer wheels lock, a wedge of snow builds up in front of the tire, and even though you release the brakes, the tire still has to go over that wedge. I think there are situations, where touching the trailer brakes will straighten it out, however, most times, it's usually in a panic situation, and roads have a natural slope to them, and sliding tires will follow that path.

Hi moosc, I think the other problem is, when you release the johnny bar, it takes a while for the air in the trailer brakes to bleed off. Wasn't there a special glad hand for the trailers you could get, that let the air out faster?

Easy way to get some off your butt without actually hitting brakes and causing a worse situation.
