I just saw your thread tonight. I am glad you found a company to hire you. Don't know what you did, don't care. I met some really good people in prison. Also some scumbags. Of course when I was running for US Congress, I met a lot of good people in Washington DC as well as some real scumbags.
So, why am I posting to this old thread. It gives me a chance to tell a prison story. For your entertainment and a bit of insight into the criminal mind.
I was running for Congress again, when I was in prison in 2004. I was sent to the Prison in Tipton, MO. Everyone knew me as all of the Television stations carried my lock up. Me in an Orange Jump suit made a striking subject.
I made friends with an older black gentleman. He was from near where I now live in Liberty, MO. We were talking one night and I asked him why he was there. Everyone in prison talks about their cases. Not much else to do. So, he tells me his story. He was a thief. Always had been. Grew up in the South were blacks were just called ####### and never really had the opportunities. His father had been missing after a KKK run in back in the 50s. So he grew up, stealing. He was not making excuses, it simply was the way he knew. He gets a good job in Liberty working for a cabinet maker but steals on the side. He prefers to shop lift. He goes into the Kmart in Liberty and there is a gal collecting the cash drawers. She sets the cash drawers down in front of him and then leaves. What is he suppose to do? He steals them and heads out the door.
He then comes back a couple of days later and is just going through the store. He picks up a item here and an item there. But wait. There is a security guard that spots him. The Guard an off duty cop, takes him back to the office to call the local police to come get him. Just as he is about to get to the office, the guard puts his hands on the man. So, the man stabs the security guard.
What? You stabbed him. Of course, he says, like I should understand. This man had a very high morale standard, I just didn't know the rules. In the world this man had grown up in, putting your hands on a person was a sign of disrespect and therefore stabbing was the thing to do. I made sure to never touch him. If I was to wake him, I did it by banging on his bunk.
Again, I am glad you found a job and if you and I ever work together, no disrespect is ever my intention. Welcome to trucking. -

WStar: Sorry for necroposting, but I'm just wondering how well of a hold you have on statistics? Sure, very very basic descriptive statistics support your conclusions. BUT, and here's the rub, if you can understand statistics at the DOE level - then you'd see, clearly, that the number one driving factor (categorical variable) behind recidivism is an inability to find gainful employment. Here's an interesting statistic for you, and please dig into DOE and Google scholar to independently verify, but I've read at least 3 studies in the last 5 years that suggest that: when given an opportunity at gainful employment, felons outshine their non-felon counterparts markedly in terms of productivity. Just something to think about...
