I am not a driver yet but heard something disturbing to be this weekend. I was told some trucking companies (Schneider) make drivers pay for damage to trucks when the accident is the drivers fault. If I have been out of work for months how would I have $ to have a truck repaired. Is this legal?

Guess if they make you sign a type of contract, they could put almost anything they wanted to in it.
Somehow, I don't think SNI will make you pay for damage though.

This has been discussed often here . A carrier can find you negligent but they can't withhold damages from your pay without written consent . Read the papers you sign when hired carefully .
They could still sue you but I have never heard of this being done .

Some carriers are self insured and charge the driver a "deductible" if you will. Usually it is withheld at a small weekly amount until I this satisfied. Never heard of a company charging the full repair bill to a driver.

Companies have three things that they can do to "punish" drivers who damage equipment.

Suspend the driver with no pay

Lower the drivers rate of pay for X amount of time

    Terminate the driver..

Oh and of course the bonuses that the driver may have gotten will be zero'd

Well, several including ours.. but of course, you have actually show up for work, run the loads, not do anything stupid, not tear anything up and lately, their "green road" numbers have to be at an acceptable level.
