Truck driving is not "BIG MONEY"

My son has a certificate in Aviation Maintenance and more than enough employment hours to test for his A&P. His wife has a bachelors in Education. They basically made the same money before he came to work for me. He'll be making the same as her, but with less benefits by next year. She'll top out at about $75K. I make more than that (no college degree or any formal certification in anything), so if my son takes over the business his earning potential is directly related to how much he can grow the business. It is absolutely possible to make plenty of money without a college degree.

 

true story, I have a customer who has a PhD, his dissertation was in quantifying snail respiration........

He’s primarily a consultant these days....

 

My son dropped out of state college to work for me doing kitchen remodels. He was majoring in computer programming, and that’s one of those jobs that can be easily replaced by Indian H-1B visa workers for half price.

Even though I’m taking half the installation fee for myself while I mentor him on the job, he’s still thrilled to be making $600 - $1000 in a 28-35 hour week.

I graduated from the Naval Academy with an engineering degree in the top 15% of my class, and I’m 99.9% sure I WOULD NOT do it over again, any of it, if I could go back in time. It would have been a great time to start a trucking career (1981), or pursue a contractor’s license, or go into the Navy’s enlisted nuke program, or even become an Alabama State Trooper like my daddy. He had a great career, and retired fairly young and fairly well off.

You don’t need college to make good money. Besides, in many cases, college makes you dumber.

 

Almost all law enforcement positions require a 4 year degree minimum nowadays.

 

Impossible.

GED at best.

 

I deleted my previous comment but I do want to say, even on the lower end of trucking and just starting out if you can go OTR and live out of a truck that has at least an inverter to cook/microwave things (which most companies nowadays should have), then while trucking may not be big money you can still get ahead in life very quickly if you don't have a rental or mortgage payment (and end those/sell them off before you go OTR).

If you lived out of the truck for a decade or so and moved on to the higher paying jobs after your first year or two, you could probably set yourself up for life where any old job would get you by until retirement. If you lived out of the truck for 15-20 years you could probably retire early if you moved to a cheaper country/cheaper part of the USA.

So for most not BIG MONEY, but, it is a very flexible profession with ways to get ahead in life financially.

 

I didn't check further than one state away from me, but the Alaska State Troopers, Anchorage PD, Seattle PD and Washington State patrol only require GED. My friend at APD makes over $100K a year.
