Anyone here ever have the thought of purchasing a rig of their own to have on standby to go from company driver to O/O if things go downhill. It crosses my mind once in a while

Its a bad idea on many MANY levels. Trucks dont like to sit. Youed be amazed how fast you rack up repairs from just sitting.

For the most part ‘if things go downhill’ for a company driver, conditions for O/O’s are just as bad.

That's like loading up your pockets with lead weights in case you have to jump off a cruise ship. How on earth are you planning on operating a truck more efficiently and with more high-paying customers than the companies with decades of experience doing this same thing?

It depends, how much money do you have to idle an asset?

I can afford it, but you may not.
