I had a driver roll over a 2011 Peterbilt, truck was on its side for about 8 hours, The insurance company is totalling the truck. I want to buy the salvage as the truck has only 70000 miles on a complete rebuild. Many other new parts on the motor, basically everything under the hood is new. My question is, what are my concerns and what is a good checck list to see if the engine has gotten damaged. It is a Mercedes Benz engine and i would hate to throw away the 38000 i spent to rebuild it. What do i need to look for to determining if the motor is still good.

Wow! $38k for a rebuild! I can see why you want to salvage the motor. Main thing that you need to know is if the motor shut of when the truck rolled, or if the driver shut it immediately. If not the engine most likely would have been running with out oil pressure and would damage the engine

I’d hook up a laptop or scanner and see if it shut off from low oil psi. Probably pull the pan and look at the bearings regardless.

Wow what model Peterbilt? Never seen a Pete with a Merc engine. But I am thinking in a Class 8 truck.

I used to work in a dealership that had a body shop. The insurance companies used to make us pull the oil pan and inspect the crankshaft bearings on all tip-overs. Not one
engine had damaged bearings as long as the oil stayed in the engine. Only ever saw 2
engines suffer bearing failure and they were mechanical engines. Both of them had the
throttle pulled open in the crash and the oil all blew out the vent on the ground while the
engine ran at high idle until it ran out of fuel or seized.

Easiest thing is talk to the driver and see if the engine shut itself off, he did it or no.....from there, if you have access to the truck (im sure its someplace accessible) see if it runs properly etc....

Heck if it cheap...worse case is you salvage a bunch of parts.

Its a crap shoot but like i said, if its cheap and you can use the salvageable parts.....
