I remember the first and last time I was ridding along with my Uncle Jerry. It was to be just a short trip from Jax fl. to Tallahassee Fl. Early in the morning we left in his company truck which was about a 1958 Cabover Mack own by Ploof trucking, pulling a flatbed. I was about 12 years old at the time. We get outside of the city limits of Talla. and about 5:00 am he tells me that he's going to let me out at this intersection and to wait for him to unload at the yard. Cannot be in the truck for this. Well,-- Okay. Only problem is I got hungry about a hour back and I found some Chicklets chewing gum in the truck. This help as I chewed about six of them. Still hungry. So as I watch Uncle Jerry drive off I started to cross the 4 lane intersection at dusk. No cars, nobody in sight. I make to the middle of the road and STOP. Oh no,--- I got to use #2 real bad. So bad I don't try to move for fear everything will come out FAST.I can't stay in the middle of the road ! So doubled over and looking like some kind a freak walking I made it to the far side where a building was. Closed of course. I just Got my pants down in time. Those Chicklets turn out to be Ex-lax chewable tablets. What a mess. There's more to this story, but right now ---I'm still hungry.

Have you guys noticed that big truckstop chains, (especially T/A) have removed a lot of stuff from their menus lately? T/A is starting to remove buffets and making the whole menu "all you can eat" and they are now selling mostly sandwich plates that are easy to make. Also, the "heart-healthy" marked stuff has gone away and they are focusing on the good -ole boy grease filled stuff again... LOL
-
Good observation. The TA in Jessup, MD; knock on wood, still has the buffet but that's only on weekdays. The weekend buffet was discontinued two years ago in October 2008. I liked the buffet seven days a week.
Maybe the reason why the sandwiches are focused on since they are easy to make is the turnover of kitchen help. They don't have any true chefs left that know how to make a good meal, so, the management decides just have the current kitchen staff slap together a sandwich which is easier than developing a full meal. I would like to see an episode (s) of Fox TV's "Hell's Kitchen" set up at a truck stop.
I liked the heart healthy section of the menu and it's a mistake to bring back the grease filled stuff. -

Just stop at the former flying j here in Des Moines, Iowa, now a loves, they ruin that truckstop, now lot lizard heaven for sure, but if you go out the drive, go east and 1/4 mile on the north is the machine shed restaurant, i gurantee you will need three doggy bags , cause they stuff ya there , the best steaks i ever tasted and you can cut em with a fork , there that juicy and tender , next is my fav stops, just as you get into Mo , from the Ia side is Cameron Mo, there is a mom and pop resturant, again very close too the style of machine shed resturant, just good homemade food, and wear a cacther mitt , cause they'l toss you a biscuit from the kicthen, super cool and the young kids love that and i enjoy myself there, most times so much i dont want too go back too the truck, wacthing the young kids cacthing the biscuits its a blast.

The first time I went to eat at Miss Katie's Restuarant inside Stone Mountain Amuseument Park (Stone Mountain, GA) they asked me if I wanted hand tossed buscuits. "Of course" !, I said.
So, the waiter and waitress stood off to the side and jiggled their arms a bit. I was not too bright at that moment and could not figure out what they hell they wanted me to do. So, they had to show me the buscuit and told me to cup my hands like a baseball catcher would. I said, "Oh, sorry" then they tossed me the buscuit. I must have been the dumbest diner that week for them.
