I discovered a really cool new place since I posted this. Theodore Roosevelt National Park rest area on 94 in ND. Exit 32. Has a trail that goes down through a canyon and past a bunch of interesting rock formations. The only problem is that it's closed in the winter and probably some of the fall/spring.

Sparks ( Reno ) Neveda behind the TA has a big lake with a walking trail that circles the entire lake.

Here's another cool place. It's the marshalling yard for the Chicago Convention Center. Only a mile walk along the lake from the loop and downtown. They let any truck park there for $23, even if you are not delivering to the convention. Pricey but kind of worth it.

They have on-site restrooms and everything. Great place for a 34.

Just watch out for the mean park ranger. He yelled at me for letting my dog swim in the lake.

A sad life for a dog to live. Confined in the cab of a truck. Dogs need to be out free in a nice big yard at home. 4 legs to be limited to a sleeper or 10 min walk at a truckstop...animal cruelty

There is a beach that you can walk for a long while around lake hartwell. It’s a big rest area and the beach is almost completely ignored because you do have to walk through some trees to get there. There also isn’t an obvious path down to the beach. Easiest way is at the south end behind the fenced off electrical transformer area.

Caveat: this year hasn’t been so good because of all the rain has the water line right up to the trees with the beach completely flooded. Keep it in mind for next spring/summers

Even the updated google maps shows the beach completely gone due to flooding.

Another one: the rest area on us-17 in south mills NC gives direct access to Dismal Swamp state park. Miles of hiking trails here. This one is kinda away from most freight lanes so I have only had the fortune of being there once.

If you google map that location, you can see a straight path through the trees towards the back of the lot. No particularly interesting scenery, but there are branching paths along the way.

    Eastbound rest area Oregon i84

After you park your truck, walk back towards the ramp where you entered the rest area. There was a gate that prevent vehicles from going up a path. I walked around the gate and enjoyed a nice hiking trail up the side of the mountain.
