I need to fashion a smaller antenna for 10/11 meters for a base set up. I'm looking to put a Monkey Made or similar antenna on a 10' steel mast that is bolted to a cold water pipe vent. Coax will be about 30 feet of RG8X or better. Will this work alright? I know it won't be a killer station but I figured if these work on trucks with questionable ground planes then it should work on a roof with a decent ground.
I'm using a Tram 1499 right now and it works but I'm hoping for a little better performance. Radio is a President Lincoln II +.
Thoughts?

Just go for the "trusty" 1/4 wave whip. Any piece of metal 108" long. Coat hanger, copper pipe, aluminum.
I would focus on trying to get a taller mast first. At least 16' above the roof. But, just my opinion. -
I'd love to get a taller mast or just run an A99. But I have antenna restrictions. If the center loaded antenna will work on the short mast I can keep it hidden from the street. I've gone over this in my head and theoretically it should work. But I was just wondering if there is anyone here that has actually done something like this and if so, what were the results.

That might have worked but I have cement slab all around the house. Right now I have an 11 meter dipole that I made slung really low behind the peak of the roofline. It works, but I think a true vertical antenna would be better. I have a Francis antenna I got from a friend. I'm going to put it up there on a short piece of EMT and see what happens. At the end of the day, I may just have to settle.
I appreciate the comments. -
Back in the 80s I had a similar problem. I bought an antenna like this one to put on a rental house we were in.

I just used a couple of wood screws to hold it on the eave at the peak of the roof. I just filled the small holes with some wood putty or caulking when I moved. Granted it wasn’t a top performer like a 20 foot CB antenna, but it did the job and the neighbors never said a word about it. Having it high off the ground helped too, versus mounting a short antenna down on the ground.
Edit: oops, never mind. I see you are already using that antenna, my mistakeLast edited: Aug 20, 2019

I guess the other option would be to use a MFJ dipole mount and use two fire stick antennas, and give that a try.

Just do this.
Put the antenna up how ever you like it and run say ten or fifteen radials off the base. It is that simple. You can use any wire for the radials, hell you could even attach them to the base of the antenna and let them hang (seen that before and it worked).
OR you can move. -

Shogun, I’ve always wanted to talk to someone who had that DX Engineering Mount.
They say it will only work for an antenna that’s 28 feet tall maximum, but I built an all meter vertical that’s 33 feet total. BUT,,,, the top few feet is made out of a 102 inch whip. So in reality mine is about 26 feet not coming noting the whip
I wouldn’t know which one to get anyway,,, my mast is 1 1/2 pipe. It seems as though they make them for name brand antennas onlyshogun Thanks this.
