If you are using regular chains, they have to go on the outside tire......as if you would want to go through the nightmare of putting them ONLY on the inside tire? Some of these regulations are just mind-numbing! :biggrin_25510:

Of course, I am sure that there is a goober SOMEWHERE that would try to put regular chains on the inside tire so that they wouldn't have those ugly things messing up the appearance of their truck! :biggrin_2559:

The auto chains actually give you traction on the inside tire. The chains aren't long enough to go under both tires......probably because if they don't feed just right, they can literally rip the tires to shreds. They have to be adjusted properly, or you will have major tire problems.

If you think about it, the traction would be the same either way. The various DOT agencies recognize the fact that auto chains work on the inside tire, and are OK with it. I think part of the reason they readily accept it is the fact that school buses, ambulances and fire trucks out here run on auto chains too.

The main goal for DOT is that you have traction assist on each side on at least one drive tire.

When I worked for Mason Transportation out of Evergreen Colorado all of the chains were full sets, in other words we had to hang inside and outside tires and if we were caught with singles it was immediate discharge on the spot.

All drive tires, and trailer were to be chained.

It must have been a while ago. I get ribbed for carrying two rails with my four singles.

DOT is only requiring you carry enough chains for seven tires now. Only two of them are required to be link chains. The rest can be cable.
