My response is mostly for other new drivers reading this and thinking about getting a CDL and hiring on with a training company, like Werner.
Be diligent in your research. Talk to current drivers with any company you're thinking about. Especially drivers that have been there a while and those going through the companies training.
DO NOT believe recruiters. You can tell they're lying if their mouth is moving.
Once you choose a company, no matter how bad it gets (and it will get bad), stick it out for at least six months. Job hoppers are looked down on by the better companies. -
I would be inclined to agree with the gen population here. I drove OTR for 6 months in a crappy truck that I know for a fact the boss didn't pay more than 5K for. I went with him to pick it up. It was a Sterling with a million miles on it and the valve for the heat would rattle closed overnight while trying to stay warm. I too, got tired of it and left for a local job. Kept that local job for 5 years and since have moved and things have gotten tight so I am looking to go back out on the road. Too bad for my dumb #$$ I didn't stay for longer because a lot of places say their insurance won't accept me because I don't have 2 years OTR experience and the 6 months I did have was 5 years ago. Helluva catch-22 to need 2 years OTR experience when you can't get hired without it and 5 years of local hauling, with a completely clean MVR, doesn't count. My advise, for what it's worth, would be to stick it out for AT LEAST a year, 2 if you can.....then from my experience, all doors would be open.
