Trucker's girlfriend deperately needs some advice!

Hold up for a minute.

So natural ability made a truck and trailer materialize out of thin air and prevent LEO's from stopping said drivers for operating a cmv without the proper endorsement?

Have their genes been modified to speed up evolution so driving is an instinct to them?

Dare I say......supertruckers.

Some people will pick it up faster than others and some aren't cut out for it, but come on; instant expert drivers?

Please go into a more detailed explanation.

30 years ago there was nobody there to hold your hand. You either did it or you didn't.

 

30 years ago a CDL wasn't required either.

 

I would wager a bet that 30 years ago someone did not get in a truck and hit the highway at 65 mph without anyone showing them the ropes or offering some guidance.

 

To the best of my knowledge...nobody showed my Dad anything.

He bought the truck, played around with it a few days and went and got his Chaufers License (spelling?)

Lots of drivers probably did have some help...but 2 months with a trainer???

 

So your recommendation to today's wannabes is to go out, buy your own truck, and "play around" a few days to see if they can handle it?

I was saying that in those days...they separated the men from the boys.

Nowadays they do their best to teach the boys to be men...if that makes any sense to you.

 

I'm sorry, Ridgerunner. I still think people that a driver who is taught to drive a truck can be an equally good driver as a person who steps into the truck and masters handling it within days.

Besides, there's a whole lot more to driving a truck than simply shifting gears and keeping it between the lines.

I think we'll just have to agree to respectfully disagree on this one!

 

I had a pretty short 'training' period and I'm thankful for that. I would have had a very hard time spending months in a truck with another person. 7 Days was more than enough.

The way I see it, the most important things can't be taught anyway. Sure, the more time you spend with a 'trainer' the more prepared you will be for different situations but no matter how much time you spend with them, as soon as you get on your own you will encounter new situations and that is when the real learning starts.

Besides the ability to 'shift gears and keep it between the lines' how you deal with new situations is what matters. Common sense, good judgement and patience can't be taught and it doesn't take months for a 'trainer' to figure out if you have them.

 

We don't disagree...I'm just tired and not making my point very clearly. I'll try again tomorrow.
