When I first started an old man asked me for a ride to Baltimore. When we got there, he would not get out of the truck. After buying him a couple hotdogs, he still wouldn't leave. A couple hours later I was starting to feel uncomfortable with the situation. Finally I just told him he had to leave, lol.
I will never ever give anyone a ride again even if I could. Most hitchikers are whacked in the head. That old man broke me from it.U4EA Thanks this. -
Yep and if a company driver there is no way !

I enjoy being alone. If I wanted a rider, it would be my wife. If I wanted a stranger in my truck, I would train! The problem is that most people who need a ride across the country will either fly, drive or take a bus. It's the shadier bunch that look for rides at the truck stops. They are usually disgusting, non-showering, dread locked, camouflage pant wearing, backpack toting, scruffy dog wielding failures of Darwin. They travel in packs and can usually be found at the OWS encampments playing drums when not trying to bum their way through life somewhere else.
Would you want those people in your car and/or house Mr. Charles?

Okay I understand your perceptions, judgments, and concerns. Rideshare is a great program that works for many people. It does not involve hitch hikers, it is done completely over the internet. There are variations or degrees of security that can be enabled. Craigslist would be an example of a loose rideshare program which consist of just emailing back and forth. Couchsurfing on the other hand has security measures in place. One is that people must verify who they are through a three step process of verifying your identity and address through a credit card. Two is a vouching system which people can vouch for you as a good or reliable person. A person must get vouched for by three different people before they can vouch for anybody themselves.
Another is people have a profile that they fill out and you can read before deciding to host them or give them a ride. The choice is yours as to whether or not you want someone to stay at your house or ride in your car but as they say what you put out you get back. I have hosted 20-30 people so far and have had all great experiences! Now I am going on a trip myself and will be riding and staying with different people all over the country.
The more limitation you put on yourselves the less you live. I thank you for your participation and helping me know whether this would be a good idea or not. I hope that some of you can see that not everyone is a dreadlocked, vagabond, freeloader looking for a free ride but that real and honest people like to share life and experiences in ways that makes life more enriched and fulfilled. It is the separateness between us that makes for the world we experience today but we can change it!
Peace

I remember reading somewhere that a killer was linked to Craigslist.
Why would a person want to consider such a risky venture?
You as a unknowing subject that could disappear off the face of the earth?
The driver who most likely will not stop for anyone anymore, because, you never know if someone will be in the shadows and end their life.
A CMV is not somewhere to risk a life in.flightwatch Thanks this. -
Living in fear is no way to live. One killer on Craigslist and now everything on Craigslist is bad and scary! Life is risk. Nothing is truly secure. Security is an illusion of the mind. The only true security is knowledge. Knowledge protects. But you can only gain that type of knowledge by not being afraid. Fear is the mind killer.

We are afraid all the time, it keeps us alert. Read your little poll, your odds of you and your freeloading friends getting a ride are slim and none. And if for whatever reason you were in my cab and I had to listen to that new age drivel, the truck would stop and you would be on the side of the road.
wanna_be_trucker Thanks this. -
It would be my luck that the dude riding with me USED to be a "Navy Seal" or "Super Duper" top secret agent.
You know... that weirdo that hangs out at the truckstop?
You want me share a ride with that guy?
Oh-No... not happening.Last edited: Nov 26, 2011

Yes, life is a risk. But the risk can certainly be reduced by following some common sense measures.....such as keeping strangers looking for a "ride" out of your truck!
