I personally wouldn’t do it and no way in hell would I try it after the sun sets. I’d be googling the nearest shop and route myself there..if you’re lucky you might make it.
Just went through it but luckily I had just unloaded when I got the warning. My truck gives something like 4 hours warning. Made it to Dobbs Peterbilt in Post Falls.. Got me right in and fixed me up in a couple hours..only needed a software update..got lucky!
Unless you’re hauling fresh chicken I’d tell your company that you’re bringing it to X shop unless they have a better one closer they would prefer to use.
Bringing the truck to a shop is not abandoning it.
The DEF issue could be as simple as a clogged vent so open the filler cap and listen for a vacuum sound. If you hear air rushing in then you have a clogged vent. Just putting it out there because it’s a constant problem with my new Peterbilt.mattbh23 Thanks this. -

I don't know about abandoning the truck and load. That can mess you up. Are you working for a company that can repower that load? That should've been the first option. Mind you, I'm speaking as though that wasn't discussed with your company.

my first thought, but it’s a small company. That would’ve been the most logical thing

Will it do a force Regen? Usually what these crappy trucks needs. Last Tuesday I was told I need a turbo, I'm still waiting for turbo. Going to shops in today's environment sucks. Being a def issue I would run it till it ends up on the side of the road, then they have to send ya to the shop via tow and cost them even more money. Then you can be like see I frickin told ya so

FWIW, when I was an overnight breakdown agent (at another company), I couldn't even find tire vendors at night in the upper plains. More than once, I had to get drivers with malfunctioning reefer units to drive 500 miles before I could get them fixed. Good truck mechanics up there are few and far-between.mattbh23, Suspect Zero and snowwy Thank this. -
The mom and pop shop did a forced regen and that didn’t clear up the codes they had to send me to freightliner
