Diesel electric is a more attainable goal here IMO.
They built a proof of concept truck using a 1962 Kenworth heavy spec truck. 8,800 kg bobtail and fuel economy of 12L/100 km bobtail. That's about 20 mpg.
I like the simplicity. Its designed by drivers, not a bunch of pencil pushers.

A tractor unit is the best when it achieves the highest payload with the maximum interior space and comfort using the smallest amount of fuel with the highest levels of reliability.
