The milk hauling business would be #1 in this category. Half the stuff isn't logged and logs are "backed up" beyond belief. I could write a book about this business, but nobody cares. If you run legal, you are going to get the "crap" and the drivers who will run illegal will be given the best.

This is such a old argument. I heard in when I 1st went on the road in '96, and it was old then. 1st thing my 1st trainer told me, "Don't try to figure out what you make per hour, unless you don't like the job and want to compare wages to a stay at home job".

If you like/love trucking, and can at least make what you need to get by, then great. If you don't like it, and can't get by on the pay, then you need to find something else to do.

Unfortunately, the only way a newbie is going to find out what it's really like is when he actually gets out there. The hype thrown at potential drivers about growth in the industry, driver shortages, money to be made, how easily and quickly one can be trained, etc..., are too attractive to ignore for lots of people.

What!? I'm not entitled to be home Fri. afternoon till Mon.AM?

I'm not entitled to top pay with only a month of experience?

I'm not entitled to one of best, if not the best, trucks in the fleet?

I'm not supposed to tell the company how I want to do things?

What kind of lousy company (job, career) is this??? :biggrin_2559:

You are correct. Here's some data that is a little more current (2008-2018). I know, it's BS too!

I'm not sure why anyone would be thrilled at the prospect of a company letting them work 70 hours to gross $800. I understand some drivers love OTR and that's fine, but I despised carrying out company directed instructions with no compensation.

Paddington made a great point that I agree with 100%. I've never seen a group of people argue against being compensated for their time more than OTR truck drivers. For the life of me, I cannot understand why many feel it is OK not to be paid a decent hourly wage for line 4 work. Then again, someone did offer to work for free once so maybe I should not be surprised.

Yesterday was the worst day I've ever had at this company - it sucked. Nothing went right from start to finish - it plain sucked. Long story short, we never run Sunday's but had to because of the weather Friday night. For anyone that been through DC, Rockville, Baltimore, or N Va in the last two days you know what that looks like. Took me over two hours to dig out my truck and I lost about three hours between accidents and getting stuck on the road. Running back with a few of our drivers and a couple FedEx Freight's - we were whining up a storm trashing our companies for making us run on those roads on Super Sunday and the other stupid things our companies make us do. We all agreed on one thing, it could be a lot worse, at least we were paid for it. I was paid to the minute at my normal hourly wage for two + hours of digging my truck out and trying to hook a set, was paid an hour to sit behind a wreck, and was paid an additional hour for getting stuck on the road. How can anyone in their right mind argue against that - How.

Everyone seems to have missed my point...

McDonald's... Walmart... Burger King... etc, will NOT let you work enough hours to make a living. So, even if you wanted to work 70 hours or more to make $800 a week at a burger flipping job, it is impossible.

I take that back... they will let you work 70 hours a week. But first they'll make you a salaried "manager". Then you get to work 80 hours for $400 a week. And 100 hours the week after that... for the same $400.
