For my first post I wld like to say Happy Thanksgiving to all !

Ok so here my question for you experienced truckers. I live down south in Texas all my life and wld like to drive a truck decent miles to earn a living. I have read that it is rare for minority drivers (Black,Hispanics) to earn a decent income and that only the "Good Ole boys" make money. Is this a harsh reality or just stereo type?

if your a hard worker and not full of yourself, then you can do it. race has nothing to do with it. it's the ones who hide behind the race issue that cause the problem. if your honest and hard working i don't care what color you are.

Might be true at a few companies, but not as a general rule.

Correct !!! Carriers are blind to race although there are stereotype "molds" out there. You will likely be fed slow to see what you have. Give good clean work, paperwork etc. and do what's needed ( legally ) and any question will disappear rapidly.

And S.H. is correct..... play any one of the race cards and you will be put into the "mold" I speak of IMO.

I don't think racism in this industry is so much about black/white/brown as it is about old and new. Old way is slowly disappearing and fighting to stay on top. The new way is trying to prove it can be done and race to the top.

In general, Stereo type. There certainly is prejudice here and there but it's a two way street.

Our local Pepsi distributor was a mix of white and hispanic drivers several years ago. The shop got a new hispanic manager a couple years ago and now all the drivers are hispanic... Hispanics make up about 30% of the population around here so I doubt it is just a coincidence that ALL the drivers would be hispanic.

I'm sure someone here could point to a similar situation with white management hiring all white drivers. --Like I said, two way street.

And if you are talking about Over The Road Mega-Carriers... I would say it's just the opposite of the stereotypical "Good ole boys" mantra. I see just as many "minorities" as white folks on youtube videos of the Carrier's Orientations/trainings.

Ethnicity is the last thing employers (as a whole) are worried about in this industry. If you have a clean background, and can hoist your butt into the drivers seat, you can find a job in this industry. --It may not be a job worth having... :biggrin_2559: but your skin color won't hamper your career.
