That is a possibility with a new truck. I do my own maintenance and try to replace some things before it goes bad and also carry extra parts and a spare tire with me on the road. I hate paying those high shop rates and mechanics that stand around on my time then don't have a clue of what they are doing.
A wise truck driver told me once, why buy used your just buying someone else's problems. I don't know if he was wise or not but there is a little truth to it. I have bought two used trucks in the past one about broke me and the second one I ran it for two years and all it cost me was an alternator, batteries and a set of tires (ex-CFI truck) I traded it off right before the motor went down with about 900,000 miles on it for my first new truck.
The only thing I hated about looking for a good used truck is you see how some of these trucks are abused by some drivers and you don't know how they were taking care of and the dealer gets them does a complete detail on them and they are all shiny and look good. You just don't know what your buying and who wants to sink a bunch of money in a used truck.

you'll go broke at landstar without payments. But now this response will likely spur another new thread for his glowing landstar rebutle. Some people just can't handle it if everyone doesn't see things their way

Man did I screw up and not even know it till I read this. I hauled a $550 load. But I don't have a $100,000 truck but I do have a expensive trailer. It was such a cheap load I did 8 of them and deadheaded back for each one. Guess I won't do that again.
-
Well what were the miles on the load? I have hauled a lot of $500 dollar loads with my $100,000 truck that was going 100 to 150 miles.
Thats what I don't get I guess some of these guys are talking about hauling a $1000 dollar Landstar load and going a 1,000 or 1,200 miles with it. I am talking about going 300 to 400 miles for the same money which all my loads were with my step deck and I will do that everyday with my $100,000 dollar ride. -
They were cheap LS loads, 8 miles each way, but last summer I did have some $1600 loads about 10 miles each way, but I only got 7 in one day. This 50% deadhead is killing me. I know LS sucks, but I don't pull a box.

I hear you on the van freight. lol -
ya you also are not a new landstar BCO. the old timers do have it made over there. Unfortunatly for everyone else it sucks.
Even Native Dancer who has been with landstar since the begining of time is honest enough to express the point that landstar is two different companies depending on how long you've been around. rather then to spout the pro landstar ######## as gospal -
Question...we turned in our fancy new truck last year and bought an older truck 2001...We only have one year to pay on it rather than 4 we would have had with the new truck. Repairs have cost a lot, but my husband does not know how to do repairs himself, but is learning along the way...at least with the simpler things such as belts etc.
But now I hear about new regulations for trucks, is it going to bite us in the ### in a few years if we have to buy brand new anyway? Or will it really cost that much to make our old truck up to standards...emmissions, APU, and whatever else will need to be done? -
If Southern Pride is going to post info based on valid experience, should it really matter how many threads he starts? I for one hope he keeps posting...

now my friens the new laws you are worried about are california laws and they are already in place and the fines are expensive i dont run california at all forthat very reason, as far as the rest of the states i dont think you have anything to worrie about for awhile if ever.
now its true you have to work on an older truck an even though your husband dosent no how to work on then the fact that he is learning is a good thing. most of what goes wrong with an older truck are small things that you can take care of yourself and in doing so save a lot of money. and that is a part of trucking .
it sounds to me like you guys are already doing fine, you got the spirit , you got the drive , you got the willingness to learn and you are just keep up the good work my guess is your going to do great. HAPPY TURKEY DAY and stay safe.--southernpridesnowbunny and truckmetal13 Thank this.
