Some of the larger outfits that run the longer ferry’s have 2 drivers one on the island and one on the mainland...and they just send the rig back and forth.

Depends on the conditions. I got transferred on barge on Shoal Lake that was same length as truck and trailer. Chalks? Hell no! Makes for interesting ride in rough water
During winter I could drive across the lake -
