I went to trucking school last summer and it did not go well. I had a HELL OF A TIME trying to learn "double clutching". The instructor had his hands full with me to say the least. I ended up just getting a class B license. School told me to drive B truck for a while and consider coming back. Has anyone been through a similiar situation and actually gone back after a period of time? Just looking for anyone who has had similiar experience. THANKS!!
try trucking school again??

I was lucky and double-clutching was natural for me, backing is my struggling (and downshifting in a hurry).
Do you know what part of it is throwing you? Are you not getting the clutch released and depressed again in time, or is it an RPM's problem? Have you tried watching it done on youtube? Without knowing how you are struggling I can't offer much help. Hopefully others can. -
It's hard to trouble shoot a problem without actully seeing it! But I'll take a stab at it. From what I've seen the biggest problem is timing. If in your head your thinking about the steps EX. #1depress clutch part way #2 shift into nuetral ect ect then your going to be WAY TO SLOW to drop that gear. It has to be quick like snapping your fingers twice. As far as RPMs and truck speed, some claim the magic 400rpm , I use that only as a starting point and go by ear from there.
Good luck and give it a shot -
I'll try to help, even though I hate double-clutching, and not very good at it. Once I learned to float, I've stuck with it.
This is what I have in my mind when trying to double-clutch... The reg's say you should have no more than 1" free travel in your clutch pedal, right? Well, just add about another 1" and you should be able to move your shift lever. So when double-clutching, you don't depress the pedal to the floor. It feels (to me anyway) like you're hardly pushing it down. It's more like your bumping the clutch. Do this at the time you're ready to shift. If you're at the right RPMs, the shift lever should basically fall out of gear. Then bump the clutch again, bump the accelerator, and move the lever to the next gear.
Right after I shift into 4th, I move the selector button to high (up). Then when the RPMs are right, all I need to do is shift to 5th. I drive a 13spd, so when I'm loaded I use the splitter through the rest of the gears. For 10spds though you just repeat what you done in the first 4.
Now what an instructor at the school I went to told us, which does help with shifting, regardless of floating or double-clutch;
Gears 1-4 are going to be rather quick, you will be traveling at about 10 mph when you hit 4th going to 5th. So now you can use your speedometer to help with the rest...
15mph, 1+5=6, so you should be shifting to 6th.
25mph, 2+5=7, so you should be shifting to 7th.
35mph, 3+5=8, so you should be shifting to 8th.
45mph, 4+5=9, so you should be shifting to 9th.
55mph, 5+5= 10, so you should be shifting to 10th.
Also when doing that, look at your Tachometer, see where the RPMs are at at those speeds, AND listen to your engine. Most of the time I shift by sound.Lokix Thanks this. -
Honestly, I would try another CDL school. What kind of a "Trucking school" can't teach someone to double clutch?? Have you ever driven a manual transmission?, thats a start. Its harder for some more than others, but anyone should be able to do it. They actually told you to give up and go for your B license?? Seems like lousy instruction to me. Its not rocket science, it just takes practice. Clutch into neutral, Clutch into the next gear.

So you went to a school for your class A, left with your class B, and you are thinking about going back to the same school? Did they serve really good food or something?

Whats a clutch .i thought it was only for taking off and stoping.
dont worry you will get it .your trying to hard .quit thinking ,just do it ,it will come natural .
sounds like the wrong school for you .
i never went to a school ,but buddys of mine have and did real well with the right teacher.
