From my experience the mechanical meter on the cobra 29's ,148, and Uniden 78's have been pretty accurate when checking swr but the meter on the 29 lx and BC 980 are not so accurate. If you are showing a 1.2 and even if it were off by .5 thats still a 1.7 that is fine.

Stock 29 , 4 watt carrier 16 watt pep, with swr of 1.7 = 6% power loss resulting in 3.76 watt carrier and 15.04 watt pep, not worth worrying about, but obviously radios with higher power it does become more significant and more critical.

If his swr is off then we pretty much know resonance is off to..That means wasted power and range loss..Ridgeline suggested for him to find someone with an analyzer to tighten that up..Plus he has ant on aide of the cab, sucks dog poo there..

Would I have to have someone do the analysis with everything installed? We don't have a shop anywhere near us to do that. Maybe I could find someone I know who knows how to do similar testing as a hobby?

A cb shop should be able to help..If your radio is stock "leave it alone" till you understand more about the hobby..A nice site to start with is k0bg.com

The only CB shop in the area doesn't do installs or in vehicle testing that I know of. That's why I'm wondering if that's what needs to be done.

I appreciate whatever help I can get. I'll have to look for someone who does it as a hobby, maybe I can get one if the base tower guys in our area to look at it.
We're hurting in the morthwest for CB shops. The next nearest one to our area is in Albany, Oregon, an hour south outside of our service area.
