Well here's the latest. He had me log in to his driver portal to see if his next check info was posted. He grossed $781.91 He drove 2680 miles. But his NET is only $292.26. He will have $73 put on his comdata card and $219 put on our money card. The pay period started 11/4, ended 11/10 and the office person in Memphis said he took an advance on the 11th....ok....so how can that be counted when the pay period ended on the 10th?? Also, what is the DRV Reimb/Deduct for because that was $50. The rest that was held out was the state and federal taxes and the rider insurance which he's going to cancel since there's no way I'm riding again until summer.
That is why he must get an advance. $73 is not enough to cover food, cigarettes, and scales. He buys food for the truck before he leaves out but he has 2 weeks left and only has a can of fruit and a can of Beefaroni and some water.
We're just aggravated because he still has not had a single late load out of 54 loads, no accidents, nothing. He's been staying out 4 weeks because when he stayed out 2 weeks his checks were still under $200. It kinda feels like he's busting his ### and being a good driver for nothing. -
Last pay period (check for 11/12) he only drove 1772 miles and his gross pay was $525, net pay was $422. I just don't understand why so much is held out for his good checks because I KNOW he got an advance or two for last pay period yet they didn't include that in the deductions. Guess maybe he should start slacking off and have late loads and get less miles since they don't take as much. he doesn't get recognized for his on time loads anyways.

The danger in a scenario like this, and perhaps you folks are already there, is getting too broke to quit and move on from a situation where almost anything else would pay more. Stuck grinding it out with little or nothing to show for it.
I don't know how you folks hang on. The lateral move, mega to mega, isn't a great move. Yet at the same time there doesn't seem a realistic light at the Swift tunnel you and hubby are trying to trudge through.
Anything new on the job search?koncrete cowboy Thanks this. -
You need to disect his pay statements, what your saying can't be true about the 2700 mile runs
Truckergirl0720 and RightCoast Thank this. -
Is he paying for company benefits? That can be rather expensive depending on the plan. Also, has he changed his W-4 information? Swift automatically sets drivers as single with no deductions. You would have to go in and manually change that information to married and add the appropriate amount of deductions for your situation.

These folks need a better job for hubby.
Put the magnifying glass away and step back.
He has a little over 6 months experience and not making enough to get by.
He runs the loads he gets from Swift and 'runs pretty steady'.
At 28 cents/mile, how much better is it going to get for him?
2000 miles = $560 gross. Gross. Gross. Gross.
I would make that on 1400 miles or less.
Plus breakdown pay and $18/hr for all loading/unloading over 2 hrs. -
The only benefits we get from swift is $2.52/week for vision and $11.36 for dental. We couldn't afford the health insurance. But what do you mean by disecting his pay statements? I wrote down all the deductions from this pay period and his total miles. He has state tax, FICA (no idea what that is), FMHI (also no clue), FD witholding, vision, dental,DRV Reimb/Deduct, summer rider insurance which will be cancelled Monday, hopefully, advances ($260 but he got one advance on the 11th which is not in this current pay period that they are trying to add). He had 2680 miles. Last pay period he only had 1772 miles and his gross pay was $525 with a net of $422.
He's going to try to get on at Melton because he was already told he'd be starting at .35 cpm there. There are no local driving jobs here, hardly any kind of jobs here but with this check I'm going to have to decide which ONE bill gets paid out of house payment, water, or car insurance. Forget about groceries this week. We just can't make it on that. He wanted to become a truck driver because we foolishly thought we'd be better off and make more money but so far it hasn't worked out. He's only gotten one check from Swift that was over $600 (net pay) -
Well, pay is processed on Thursday. So even though the advance was technically in this pay period I guess they could process it out of last week's settlement. But its my understanding that advances are attached to a trip number. In addition to the advance, each one comes with a $5 fee (plus fees for using his ComData card). I just started here so I don't know anything but what we were told in orientation but from my previous experience in the industry, it can be incredibly difficult to get ahead if he continues taking advances. If there is any possible way he can stop then he should. Is he also making sure to get reimbursed for the scales? Is he also making sure to scan all his receipts for things like lumpers and tolls too?
As for deductions, FMHI is the Federal Medical Health Insurance tax (medicare) and FICA is Federal Insurance Contribution Act (social security) and FD withholding is his income tax. I would definitely recommend looking at his W-4 and making sure that information is correct because it could make a huge difference. Just running the numbers you posted through an online paycheck calculator at the single rate, then deducting the advances, vision, and dental, it comes up at about what you posted as his net.
Also, flatbedding can be slow this time of year, and the work incredibly difficult with cold temperatures. Sometimes you can do well, but usually you run less miles than dry van but end up making the same because of the higher pay. At least that was my experience. However, Melton does have nice equipment and APUs so thats a plus.
Hope this helps.Last edited: Nov 15, 2013
Truckergirl0720 Thanks this. -
Maverick is well spoken of a lot for flats. Picky about hiring area, though.
I'm just thinking there are probably companies near her that she's unaware of. Google 'Arkansas trucking companies' will get a list of every state-registered carrier.
