When I put in my application for the hazmat endorsement they asked me where I was born. I told them Landstuhl, Germany and that my father was stationed over there in the US Army along with my mother. I told them my my folks were both US citizens. Everything sounded fine so I went and got my fingerprinting done for the background check.

About two weeks later I get a letter form the TSA in the mail saying that they have come to the conclusion that I am in the country illegally because they cannot find any immigration papers on me. They came to that determination because they saw that I was born in Germany and either the stupid person taking the application hadn't put down the reason for that or the stuipid person going over the application didn't undersdtand that I was born to US citizens.

So I decide to appeal the decision, which you can do as long as it's within 60 days of the disapproval letter. I get every form of identification together that I have and make notarized copies of it. I sent them a copy of my driver's license, my social security card, my birth certificate, and the forms showing that I am a citizen of the US born abroad to US citizens. I send all of that to them via certified mail. I got the notice that somebody from the TSA signed for the package about a week later. Then all I could do was wait.

About a month and a half later I get a letter from the TSA stating that they went over the information I sent them, plus other documentation and they determined that I am not a security threat. The whole process took a little over 2 months and I got my CDL with hazmat endorsement with only 8 days to spare before my license expired. I was very fortunate to get it in time because I can't do my job legally without that endorsement.

They told me here in Ohio that I can renew my license up to 3 months before it expires. I'm assuming that's a similar rule for all the states. Don't drag your feet on this, drivers. Get that process rolling as soon as you can legally do so.

Finally received TSA electronic clearance, and got my HME....Very slow (5 1/2 weeks) because Maryland handles their own TSA applications, and did their usual fumble (lost data files), but hell, that keeps 20-30 state employees employed. They use their own process for the initial TWIC apps too, which slows them as well.

Thanks to all who responded. Hope it goes better for others.

In Virginia, the local DMV told me they've been getting the letters back in 10-12 days, but it might take mine a few days longer due to the holidays. I tested a week ago and submitted the form/fingerprints at the same time. Time will tell how long it actually takes. Virginia will allow you to test before receiving the form back, but DMV won't actually add the endorsement to your license until after the form is received.

Im at over 5 Weeks now in Texas. Already training but my employer is getting frustrated. Sent two requests to look into it and no response.
