And for dry vans, reffer, and "normal" flats there is no excuse... Simply flash a light under to see the kingpin is secure. Don't even have to crawl under the trailer, just lean in a bit.
The guys with dropdeck vans and flats, a bit harder. What I do when pulling them is the tug test, then raise the gear an inch or two if needed for clearance. Pull out of the spot at a good angle so the truck is pivoted on the kingpin. Easy to see if the king pin is secured that way. Back back in to get out of the way (if needed) and finish the pre trip and hookup.
