Got a free Cobra 29 Ltd classic and a buddy suggested going by a cb shop to get it tuned up. Said he got much better range afterwards. What do you guys think?

leave it bone stock. over the years, i had spent a million or 2 on souped up radios.....just not worth it.

get yourself a good noise cancelling mic, i prefered the Road King brand, but i do believe Cobra makes thier own as well.

just get your antenna (or antennas tuned) instead. or buy new ones, if what you have is very old.

I concur with the others. If you know for a fact that no one has messed with this radio, it's probably best to leave it alone. Unfortunately the factory alignment is just a ballpark alignment, but it's better than a lot of the CB shops alignment. A good antenna system will get you more range than trying to super tune a radio. Or loud and proud as it's commonly referred to.

your buddy is not telling you everything..

    1) was he on top of a mountain

    2) was his signal "skipping"

    3) did he have a super-duper antenna?

    4) did he have an amplifier? or, a Linear i think they are called???

can't go by what others say about range, with an ambiguous statement like....."he got much better range"

CB's are known to burn up real quick, and you'll be a million miles away from the guy that "tuned it"....

and most likely, the repair receipt will say something like, no warranty or not responsible if there was a pre-existing defect he was not aware of....

say good bye to your cash.

That can be said about lots of other things too. Heck, I was better in ‘05 than I am now.

I’ve had the SRA 198 ranger for awhile now and never any problems. But a buddy of mine is on his 3rd one. Go figure......
