I just noticed the tag on my new one is Model S430SX Part # 14969880000 the old one is Model S410 Part # 175964. They look the same. Even casting numbers are the same.

So I was worried and pulled the pan today. Changed filter and oil. There was nothing in there. But at least I know for sure.

I'm pretty sure it is just a progression of part numbers for them, I think they make small tweaks to either the design of the bearing housing or maybe even wheels, but nothing major. I have seen some info on newer cat engines that have the listing of the S430.

In my mind they need to do a rework of the turbine to allow some better breathing on the exhaust side, that will always be the brick wall with the S4XX series turbos on large displacement engines.

it is virtually impossible to get debri in the oil through the turbo when the wheels fly apart like yours did. the only way I can think of is if the shaft snaps between the bearings. your cac if you ever cut one apart will only let very minuet pcs through that will be injested by the engine with no damage. the big pcs as you found out will be on the hot side of cac. but at least you know for a fact now about your oil pan. I had a cat turbo break just like yours did 2 months ago at low idle. split into and broke some blades off. was bobtailing drove it 10 miles home like that, talk about a weak running engine!

Dang, sorry to hear about your turbo failure! Really good you were close to home. Is the turbo that blew a Borg Warner?

Just one of those things that happens once in a while. Yeah the one that blew up was pretty much the same BW as the one I replaced it with. From what I was told by others elsewhere and here mine blowing up and looking like it does is a little unusual. A couple said it was the least damage they'd ever seen from a blown turbo. Lucky me :-/

The reason I ask is when I was talking with Leon about my Detroit 'changes', he's seen many BW turbos that were not genuine and are actually Chinese made. Supposedly the impeller assembly was of the powdered metal variety, not even forged steel. Unless it is a factory direct dealer, they could have the Chinese made and not know it. Probably not your case, but something to think about anyway.

You're right on about the Detroit BW. $700 out the door no core charge.

one day my neighbor took his oil pan off to put a new pan gasket on it, to help with oil leak, he found a tooth of a gear in pan. so I just leave mine on, afraid to look. :biggrin_2557:

A friend of mine had a chunk of metal fall out when they were changing the oil. Never did really figure out what it was but it's been running fine ever since lol.

bob, I bought it from Andre @ Turbo Exchange in NC. It was the real thing not a knockoff. From the looks of things maybe I should have checked there on price before being so trusting.
