One roadside mechanic screwed up our Freightliner ( Detroit) truck trying to turbocharge. The engine ran in sixth gear for a few minutes and then shut off. The Freightliner say the guy didn't clean the CAC charger and had damaged the engine. The company sent us an estimate for 50000 bugs. We need to prove it's guy's fault, he didn't clean before fixing turbo, then his insurance would pay us. Our only source of income is dead. Give us your best suggestion/advice, whatever, but help us out of it.

@erinjoe you sound like your not smart enough to own your own truck. No way can a roadside service clean your CAC it needs to be taken off and pressure washed. Yet even if it was not your engine should not be ruined. How does a roadside mechanic try to turbocharge?? And how does a truck run in 6th gear without starting off in first? 50,000 bugs sound like they are in your head? Your post makes no sense from the very start. I'm going to go sip some of my unicorn punch, but I will check back later.

Did the roadside have liability insurance?
If so simply file a claim and if denied then worry about fighting it.
If not, then the phrase "Trying to squeeze blood from a turnip." comes to mind.

Any shop that does not sell you a new cac air cooler after a turbo blow/up is a shade tree type shop, so many small pieces of steel allready went threw your eng that they will say it was allready damaged but use your insur. to get it fix at a Det. shop where you will have a warr, to get it back on road!

Have you talked to the mechanic that did the repair yet? Do you have an itemized bill? Sounds like the seals leaked oil into the CAC and the engine ran off using the motor oil in the CAC til it blew. In the future, have something solid handy to choke off the air at the intake so it will kill the motor before it blows.

As far as the $50k bill, tell them to pound sand. You can buy a junkyard motor installed with a warranty for less than half that if we are talking about a Detroit. Proving who is at fault will be difficult, especially in a case of a small independent mechanic.

There's way too much missing info here.

Did the original turbo blow up and fill the intake system with oil, which the mechanic failed to clean out when he replaced the turbo?

Was this a new/reman turbo that failed and you're looking to hang the mechanic that installed it?

There is so much info missing that no one here can advise you of anything without a better story.
