I don't recommend the swing left deal. That has you covering both sides for potential collisions and it freaks people out cause they don't understand what your doing. Keep your right tires into the right lane just enough to "stun" people into wondering what your doing. this way you have your left blocked and just have to worry bout your right. hope that makes sence

Hey, wait a minute....we have all female examiners, and you had guy???? Some of them seem like nervous nellies....one gal yelled at me to stop cause a car was passing me when I was going through an intersection....she wanted me to yield to the car....ok, but then she failed me cause I didn't yield without her telling me.....geeezzz....I was there first and the car was turning away from me....no danger of a collision, but she about wet herself. :biggrin_25525:

And none of our examiners have their CDL nor have any Class A driving experience!!!!

if im taking a tight right turn and i need to use the left lane of the lane im turning from i try to wait until im pretty close to the intersection and swing left but leave just enough room between my trailer and the curb that a 4 wheeler cant swing through

however there are gonna be times you have no choice but to use the entire left lane or in some cases even more

Yeah, I agree....plus if you are in the oncoming lane and someone hits you, can you spell lawsuit?

The jug handle turn technique was not recommended in my school....every situation is a little different, and like my instructors said, take all the road you can.

I had to back up once to make a right hand turn at a 4 way stop cause the cars wouldn't stay back when I was turning....so that made them wait even longer to get through the intersection..... as I was blocking the whole 4 way stop intersection.....and the stop sign was right on the corner, but I was not about to take it down!!!

They all seemed to find reverse as traffic started to back up... :biggrin_25525:

If you can find an intersection with a stop sign, and the road you turn onto has the white fog line, you should practice making right hand turns there, and have that trailer follow the edge of the white line as you make the turn.......... then you will be able to make a perfect right turn and see how far your tractor has to go into the oncoming lane to make the turn perfect. I happen to have that turn on my route, and I watch the trailer wheels in my right mirror just follow the edge of the white line.

It is a lot of fun to see the perfect turn!!! :biggrin_255:

ive come across a few stubborn ######## who will pull right up to the nose of my tractor when im making a right turn and refuse to back up.....i will NOT back up to make a turn no matter what...there has been twice now me and the guy basically had a pissing contest, i sat there in the middle of the intersection waiting for this ***** in his prius to back up so i could clear the turn....i set my air brakes and acted like i was taking a nap......he finally admitted defeat:biggrin_2559:

Ah, the old right turn in a 53' trailer at a small town intersection scenario, right ? It can be a challenge, for sure. First off, scan the intersection in advance. Well in advance. Look at lane width, size of intersection, traffic, AND those pesky telephone poles and fire hydrants that are smack on the corner, like 6" from the curb line. Not to mention the foolish pedestrians standing with their toes 3" over the curb edge.

Making judgements will come naturally after you have been doing it awhile. First and foremost, don't hit anything. Next, keep about 6-7' away from the right curb, so as to not allow a car inbetween your trailer and the curb. If need be, stop before you continue on and analyze the situation. Yes, you are holding up traffic, BUT, you haven't hit anything yet either. NOT hitting anything is good, hitting something is BAD. Don't worry about pissing off 4 wheelers. It happens in this biz.

And finally, you may have to scrub this attempt midstream and continue on straight and try something else. Oh, yeah, you'll have about 3-4 seconds to make all these observations as you're beginning your turn. But, hey, that's trucking, right ?

Allowme has a good point. I have had a four wheeler sneak between me and curb, they actually had two wheels up on the curb, to try and get around me. They won't be doing that again! At least not in that car! Luckily for me it was deemed non-preventable and they were at fault.

Always give yourself more than enough room and if need be make the cars backup. They will. They don't have a choice. Also if you know you are going to be going into a real tight area or little town stop and slide your tandems forward. This will give you a lot more room to play with. Mark your hole though in case you need to slide them back for going through a scale.

thanks to all of the wonderful advice. the past 2 days with my instructor has been a world of difference after reading some of the post i put alot of that info to use. i even started to use my right mirror more which has help out alot. i think at first i was paying more attention to what was in front of me than what was going on to the rear of my trailer. again thanks to all of the response. i test out next wednesday so wish me luck
