Last year (a few years ago?) VW group got caught putting a very clever "cheat" into their ECMs. Basically since the EPA's emissions tests parameters are known, it told the system to recognize when it was being driven in an EPA test and dial back performance so it could pass. It was way too deliberate to be an "oops". As a result EVERY VW Audi Diesel has been pulled from the road and outlawed. As far as I know you can't register them anymore, (but if you have one you could drive it until its registration expires) VW had to give you your money back if you turned it in. Full sticker regardless of condition. And there was some fine in the "B"illions.

VW at this point does not have a definitive answer for him what to do with them.
They offered him money towards trade in but defiently not full sticker value for them and was not a fare price.
At this point he just reregistered them to a two year ny registration and is going to drive them and see what happens. -
