Different people give up for different reasons.
Some misjudge their ability to live out of a truck for days or weeks at a time.
Some get fed up with their companies crap.
Some come into it with a misguided thought on how much money they will make &/or how much it cost to live on the road.
Some have a significant other &/or kids that can't handle them being gone all the time. Or they realize how much they miss the day to day family life & being an active participant in it.
Tons of different reasons why people decide trucking isn't for them.

ironpony,
Sorry to hear about your friend, hope the chemo works for him. In a case such as his I wouldn't call that giving up or quitting trucking. He doesn't have a choice other than to try & beat the disease & that treatment doesn't allow him to drive. Hopefully he will beat it & someday be able to climb back behind the wheel if he chooses. -
I wish the best for him.
