That's what I was thinking. My company would say "Oh, shoot, ok, we will find you something else, hang tight."

Or they would have me grab it anyway then relay it to another driver with a TWIC.

Exactly, if you are a good driver, never making waves, they work with you, or at least, they have with me.

I have "interlined" or swapped out trailers numerous times in my career. Either because a driver needed to get home, or the load he had was going by my house, or a delivery time one of us could not make due to hours of service rules.

So you pay $50.00 for an escort and take the load.

I worked for a company out of Mass. It is still in business, hauling diesel fuel to be used to re-fuel trucks on sites.

I had to go to the storage facility, one which was OWNED by Shell Oil Co.

Right there, at the seaport where the ships come in mind you to off load that stuff.

Wanna know how many times I was asked to show my TWIC card..??

    c'mon, I'm still waiting..

    Give up???

    NOT ONCE!!!

But you wanna know WHAT THEY DID ASK AND REQUIRE OF ME???

    c'mon, I'm still waiting..

    Give up????

    Oh ok, I'll tell you....

    "Where is your hard hat"...!!!

TWIC, what a waste of time, money.

As you say, "pay the escort fee". THAT WILL BE or should be, reimbursable, each time.

I am sure you will be able to do a walk in, but like someone said you might have to wait a few minutes, take a paper or magazine with you. I have the TWIC, it was mighty nice bypassing the long line at the non TWIC gate while at a port in Delaware, nobody was in the TWIC gate. One swipe of my card and I was on my way to getting loaded. It's my understanding that more and more places will start wanting them for you to enter over the next few years. I was asked if I had one while at a chemical plant in Lake Charles La last year, I think it was just for information only, but still I was asked. I do agree the system is stupid though, I don't see how this keeps ports safe. I wonder how many of the 9 11 terrorists could have qualified for a TWIC card before 9 11, if the TWIC card program was in place pre 9 11? If I understand it correctly Islamic Terrorists stay (asleep) till activated, while (asleep) they lead normal legal lives blending in to life here. What would keep them from getting CDLs with haz mats and driving gas tankers? It's foolish to think this system keeps us safe!

Some offices are busy and others are not, I live close to the one here and they said it is slow most of the time.

I made a good living for having a TWIC, mostly hauling off places that require it, escorts can be very pricey if it takes time to load or unload..

The TWIC program is just one more "feel good" type of legislation that is designed to make some feel safer and raise revenue for the government. Every time the government comes up with a new "scheme" it is supposed to make the roads or country "safer." We were told that about the CDL program. We were also told that about the TWIC program. They have already been talking about some sort of national ID card for CDL holders. You can bet that it will cost us money. It won't make the country any safer. Our borders are wide open and yet they worry about native Americans having a background check. What about the 20 or 30 million illegals that reside in this country? If there was a real desire to make the country safer they would shut down the borders. That isn't going to happen. We could stop much of the illegals and illegal drugs coming into this country. Just place land mines along the southern border. That would stop traffic almost immediately. Use some of the money we are dropping in the Middle East into border security. Put a few tanks or Predator drones patrolling the border. It would discourage many from trying to cross. When I go to most ports I find most who work there are from another country. If security was an issue they should have Americans working at these jobs. I would love to know if the TWIC program has actually uncovered any real terrorists. Besides, as I recall the government has sold or leased out some of our ports to foreign corporations or governments. If that is true then why should we even bother with TWIC.

The third time you pay for the escort you're loosing money. We go to ports fairly regularily - always get asked for my TWIC card, always get loaded quickly while the non-TWIC guys wait, and wait, and wait...

If you need it, its well worth the cost and hassle. Not everyone needs it.
