Reading through this site will answer a lot of questions . http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/
In reply to your latest questions drivers have to keep their log book updated to their current duty status and must have their last 7 days logs on them . In Canada it's the last 14 days .
The logs must be kept on file in your office . FMCSA requires them to be stored for 6 months . You'd probably want to keep them longer for tax purposes .

no you have to keep logs on file for 6 months for the d.o.t. and for 5 years for the irs. the best way to keep track of everything is to file by the week. how I have always done it. I would keep each 7 day period in it's own envolope. on the out side I would show all the expenses the profits and losses for the week. and file the envolope. on the out side of the envolope I would also put the broker and the trip number. then I would enter the info into the quick books business program on the computer. the computer you use for the business. needs to be kept off the internet at all times. the biggest thing about business. is coming up with a good system the is easy to use. and easy to explain.

by the way. you don'thave to mail your log book to any d.o.t. or fmcsa. you just keep it on file. and when the day comes for an audit by the d.o.t everything will be organized. and it makes it a lot harder for then to hand out tickets to the business. that another thing. make yourself and employee of the business. that will keep you out of some hot water. before you do anything. you should hit the finance and business sections of the barnes&noble or books a million. your going to need close to $1500 in finance and business books of various types. and that is to just get you started. after a few years. you will have a nice collection of books of the two topics. and when you hit the book store. take your time. and review the books to make sure they are going to be the right ones. once you get the business up and running. you will want to get a good finance managment program a good one start out at $200. you don't really need to take any on-line courses or spend any time at college. what i do recommend is getting off the road and finding a job in a heavy duty truck shop. you'll learn a lot there. and come across some of the wildest drivers. and see first hand the kind of crap they carry in the truck for pets. plus you'll see how they actually take of and live in that truck. truely a valueble education.
