Usually by seeing who dispatch has assigned the truck to and at what times. Yes, if one parks a truck in the yard and randomly walks up to another truck, gets in and drives off there will be no record. Well, hopefully there are security cameras, but some places are too cheap to put up cameras to see who stole their $150k truck.

Well than, that's how it will be done around my company. Drivers here just get into whatever truck they want to anyway.

What if one of your coworkers steals your ID number and drives on your e-log account? I could see that turning into a mess.

I have no problem with the 11 hr drive time, I don't want to drive longer than that anyway. The problem I have is the 14 hr rule. A few months ago I was on a 10 hr trip. Where I ran into problems is I had a blowout. I spent 4 hrs at a truck stop just waiting off duty for the tire guy. What wound up happening is I still had plenty of drive time left on my log but I ran out of the 14 hrs before I reached my destination.

The 30 is what will cause us problems.

I can't remember the last time I've took one of those, because when running under the local exemption one doesn't have to fill out a log every day to show it on. Some of us just want to get the freight delivered and get back home.

However, with an elog we'll have to do it every day. That will lead to returns, missed pickups, and the possibility of having to do residential deliveries after dark.

What a lot of guys may wind up doing is if they wind up leaving the yard late, wait until just before leaving to log in. That way you can still squeeze a full 8 hours out before having to shut down and twiddle your thumbs for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

This is an old argument. And I'm not arguing with you.

Trucking has to be the only industry where the workers fight for a non mandated break, and longer working hours. How many people work an 8-10 hour shift, with 2 15 minute breaks and 30 for dinner?

If you are running short haul exemption, then you won't have to use e-logs.

If you are running short haul exemption, then you are running less than 12 hours a day, and under a hundred air mile radius. You don't have to take a thirty minute break. Same exemption as the no log book.

True, but here's the problem. We exceed the 12-hour threshold fairly frequently.

Some mornings you can just look at your route and know already whether or not you'll wind up going into a log book for the day. There's also the situation of being on your way back to the yard and still being 50 miles away when your cross your 12. What do you do then?

The 30 caused my guys severe problems. So severe that the goobers had to give us an exemption to the 30. It was nuts, we were running superloads down a 2 lane with no shoulder for 400 miles and they realized rather quickly, that it was more dangerous to have these loads pull off and on the highways than it was for us to keep going. It took over 30 minutes to pull off the highway and pull right back on. So the goobers said, "Screw it, you're exempt."

The big problem now is that many of the metro areas are requiring night moves. But if you start your clock at 0700 and park at 3pm for the metro curfew, and the cops come get you at 2200 to move across the metro area, you will be in violation of the 14.

Clearly the answer is to run 3 sets of legal paper logs.
