Two fiery wrecks on Interstate 75 in Alachua County Friday claimed two lives and injured more than a dozen people, leaving motorists stranded and sections of the highway closed for over 10 hours.
A series of collisions involving four semis, two cars and a commuter van loaded with Veterans Affairs workers heading from Lake City to Gainesville were involved in the wrecks on southbound I-75, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.
Officers had not released the names of the two male drivers killed, pending notification of relatives and identification by a medical examiner late Friday. One was listed as a 47-year-old man from Thomasville, Ga. The other was a 53-year-old Deltona resident.
Debris from the wrecks still littered the roadway Friday afternoon, hours after the crashes occurred, the first at about 5 a.m. south of the Newberry Road exit and the second at the U.S. 441 exit in Alachua at about 7 a.m. Work will continue Saturday to repair damage to guardrails and the roadway at the crash sites, according to troopers.
The deadly morning started when the driver of a southbound semi lost control of his vehicle at the 386 mile marker, north of Archer Road. Another semi plowed into the wreckage and caught on fire, killing the driver.
