    You could think of having your own truck and leasing onto a carrier as being “contracted” on to them.

    Lease purchase is a rent to own while the truck being contracted on.

    Like Chris said, owning your truck and having your own authority is being an independent carrier.

    Me personally, if I was explaining this to someone else, I would not say that the owner-op that runs under the authority of a trucking company is leasing his truck to the trucking company. It's not like the owner-op just rents the truck out to the carrier for the carrier to put whoever they want in the truck or for the carrier to use the truck for whatever purpose the carrier wants to, such as using the truck for driver upgrade tests, etc.

    Just my personal opinion. I'm not saying your description is wrong. I'm just saying your description is a bit misleading. Perhaps saying that the owner-op is leasing his truck to the trucking company is the most common way this is described in the industry, but I don't like it.

    Yeah, that is a better description, IMO.

    I knew that before I created this thread.

    Wouldn't there generally be more money in owning your own truck and having your own authority than in being an owner-op contracted to one specific carrier?

    In general, yes. Independents profit potential is unlimited and you make 100% your own decisions. Your costs and responsibilities are also greatly higher.

    Some do better financially on their own, some do worse and go back to being contracted on.

    It’s really about what your strengths are and what you want out of your trucking life/business.

    Boy, hard to tell. That’s sorta like asking what the average ##### size is. Everybody is different and some can’t see theirs at all. lmao

    Id say that’s about average, their own pay included. I’m sure other folks will chime in. Some may make far more, and quite a few go broke too. You hear success stories but rarely hear the failures. There are many more failures though.
