U-joints going bad usually will vibrate that you can feel. I recently replaced all mine as a preventive. Old ones had nothing wrong. Still cheaper than having them done on the road.
During your daily/weekly check. When under the truck push up on the joints, if there is play, before your grease, replace them.
I've only had one u-joint drop on me.
    During my learning years.
I replace all my bearings, seals, races and U-joints on a schedule. Cheaper than failure on the road and prevents larger bills and related damage.

Is there such a "thing" as "timing". What is the "timing" in a driveline.. I've had my truck towed a couple times.
I don't think the tower has ever marked the spline when prepping for a tow. How do I check the timing.

Phasing of the ujoints is only needed if you pull the shaft apart at the slip yokes. The joint caps have to be in line with respect to each end. You can't have one at, say, 45 degrees to the other.

Ten four, how much do you expect to pay including labor and how often do you do this overhaul ?

It's not an overhaul. I replace these items every axle, five years
Labor only cost a few hundred dollars, no labor charge if you do it.
Many believe these items would last many more years and they probably would because I grease often.
I'm just a little paranoid about breaking down away from home.

Bean Jr. and HopeOverMope Thank this.

Pickup trucks aren't meant to be babied...they are meant to be worked. Hard. Load 'er down 'til she screams, then add a few more scoops for good measure. Take short cuts over curbs and through ditches. Splash through some mud and drift 'er around some curves on snow/dirt/gravel. Drive it like you stole it...it's a truck, so treat it like one.
