U-Pull-It truck salvage yards???

Where are you at? Midwest has slew of trucks yards, or used to. Thing is, salvage yards are under constant scrutiny for destroying the planet, and many have closed. You'd think with all the wrecks, should be plenty of used parts. Also, salvage yards aren't the bargain they used to be, with greedy operators think their stuff is gold, and I suppose it is. If you even consider doing this, you have an excellent chance of succeeding in this business. Why buy new when used will do? Internet will give you all the locations, except they don't call them "junkyards" anymore, it's a truck recycling facility,,

 

We have a really good wrecking yard here in the BC interior (just one.....) and....it will be gone within the year. A real shame! Over the years I have been able to get lots of parts for a fair price.

For our 5 ton flatdeck truck (single axle cab-over Ford F-7000) I was able to purchase an entire parts truck from a neighbour. Super handy to have this at home for the picking. Cost just $500.

I guess in the 'modern age' we are supposed to just throw away a perfectly good truck rather than fixing it up in the backyard. What happened to reduce-reuse-recycle to 'save' the planet lol!

And (as 201 says above) there is a lot of greed at the remaining junkyards, didn't used to be that way up here....

 

South Tejas and San Antone had 8 great vintage truck yards. Tons of good stuff. Dated from 50’s to present. Then 2008 came along and the cash for clunkers debacle. Scrap Aluminum went to an all time high and the yards cleaned themselves out of business.
There was one yard out between Luling and Gonzales that had hundreds of cab overs. When aluminum went high they got cut to pieces.

 

There’s a local lkq yard south of Chicago. They don’t let people u pull it unless you just show up with tools and ask for a part… There usually like were to busy to look…. “Can I go look?” Well maybe? “I found what I need can you guys pull it for me?”….. we’re busy …. “can I pull it myself I brought tools?” Sure and it will save you $40….

other than that is Vander Haggs up here… no u pull it stuff but I’ve wandered around there yards a lot… they have all been cool once I show up but there policy is no once past the gate… but I’ve bought lots and lots of stuff from them…

Here in SoCal maybe a handful of commercial wrecking yards that I don’t frequent, the ones I know of are not pick a part do it yourself. They say too much liability, plus they want to Charge almost much as I new part. I usually chose the new part.

 

I live about an hour from Abilene Tx, and there is only 1 u-pick yard remaining. All others, you call, and they will pull the part for you. Liability, and too many people with cordless saws-alls have killed the u-pick side of the salvage business.
