Once when I had my truck in the shop I was put in different trucks to use while mine was fixed. You would not believe some of the msgs on the qualcomm drivers sent to there dispatcher.
As a industry they have less in common with the drivers then they used to. When I started many companies would get dispatcher from the ranks of drivers because they had a understanding of the demands of driving OTR.
Now you have companies roving collage campuses hiring dispatchers with no experience in trucking and with degrees in marketing , and business management and even biology and philosophy.
They don't care because they don't know or want to know anything about trucking. The dispatcher job is just a stepping stone to something else they would rather be doing it seems these days.luvtheroad Thanks this. -
Ill say this again too as it needs to be repeated. A company does not let a driver "sit" simply because a dispatcher or planner for that matter dont "like" a driver. Math simply dont make that possible, it doesnt matter how many trucks a company has nor the amount of drivers a company has.
If you really believe that you should have worked in dispatch with me. I did not work for USX but I do know how dispatch works from 5 years in the desk. You take care of your best drivers. The ones that are a hassle, complain all the time, generate customer complaints etc sit until they are needed. We did try to get them base miles but after that the better drivers were rewarded while the others waited.Last edited: Mar 3, 2009

Xiggi: how about those dead end loads to buttchuck Miss. or wherever that has no outbound frieght? Or always getting sent to the rotten apple? Or up north load after load when the weather is bad?
There are a lot of ways a dispatcher can "break" you with a company; I've seen the disgruntled drivers complain themselves right into a reason for complaining time and again. -

LOL.......Thanks for the pep talk Beavis. Its evident were your coming from. We all know the game. -
It analogous to a Walmart cashier... do they really care if you buy two boxes of Ding Dongs or three? Probably not, after all, their wages are not tied to company profit. They could care less about the profitability of the store.
Likewise, unless the dispatcher is being paid by the number of dispatched miles, why should they care if you sit? -
Most going into it would think that doing your job as outlined in orientation without hassle or complaint would suffice. But then I been around the block a few and certainly know thats not always the case. I put most dispatchers just a little above the recruiters when it comes to honesty or actually knowing the limits of their power.
I think I had around 26 different dp's dm's or whatever at USX. Maybe a third of them where worth collecting a check. I was still driving there after most where sent packing or moved somewhere else. When you have the numbers and msgs and a rolla deck of speed dials to back you up. You don't need to depend on the dp's good graces to keep you rolling
At USX, those that don't make the noise will be left in the dust. When you are sitting in a dirt lot for hours on end waiting for a load and the DM asks for macro's you have already sent or asks you if you are loaded when you have yet to receive a dp . You will find out real quick at USX that just keeping your mouth shut and letting the company screw you over gets you nothing. Been their done that.
Luckily I don't have to depend on the dp'rs for a paycheck anymore and my company does not have a plexiglass window between me and the dp either. it's not needed
