umm... am I fired?

One thing to NOT tell safety if you want to keep your job:

"I don't need no stinking training!"

 

When going into safety, act remorseful and give a ####. If they ask what you can do to rectify the situation, answer something along the lines of "Every time I go to back no matter the circumstances involved, I will take my time and get out and look and plan every move I make by doing this. When possible I will see if a spotter is available to assist me to prevent damage to my surroundings" The guy that does not give a #### will loose his job quicker than one who does.

Most companies have policies in place regarding incidents and accidents. Some of it depends on the specific situation, but generally there is some leeway. For example, one company may allow 2 incidents in 3 years, another may use a different schedule.

Now, if you have been a bad employee, late, rude, not taking care of paperwork, mouthing off to management and to customers, that's a different story. That's when companies are looking for a reason to get rid of you. That doesn't seem like the case with you.

But he good news is that after this is all said and done, you will never, ever, do that again

When you get to the terminal someone will get in the truck and back it into your personal vehicle to teach you a lesson.

 

I folded back some landing gear when I hit a concrete column in an empty parking lot...couple weeks after running a steer rim down a curb. Had to pay for it out of my safety bonus. After I told safety what happened he just wanted to let me know he felt sorry for me that I had the trainer I did. Great trainer...crazier than you know what though. Don't sweat it and just be darn sure you learn from it.

 

I chuckle every time a driver uses the word "minor" when confessing and accident. I think you'll be fine. They probably just want to train you a little more. Every driver has a "minor" accident. I'd say 10 months incident free is on your side. Good luck.

 

I don't know about that as they are trolling Craigslist pretty hard for drivers. If they were about to go belly up I doubt they'd be doing that.

 

You're not fired but you will not be able to leave the terminal till your backing is up to their standards.If a company was to fire you they will not post it on the QUALCOMM and will not tell you they want you to come in for backing training.They just route you to the terminal and then you have a meeting with safety.If you don't pass backing in a certain amt of time,you may have to go back out with a trainer.How minor was this incident if you don't mind me asking?

 

If the company is going to fire you, generally they won't tell you, cause they are afraid you'll abandon the truck.

They'll route you through a terminal to drop the load for another driver, or to get service on your truck. Then most likely a mechanic will disable the truck, and tell you someone in the office wants to talk to you. Then they'll give you some lame excuse, if any at all, and that you have until 5pm to get off their property.

I've also noticed that new drivers with less than 1 year of exp can get away with murder, probably since government reimburses the company for damaged trucks.

Anyone with over 1 year experience tends to get fired on first ticket/accident, esp now with CSA2010.
