I run into it all the time. I haul alot of logs and there are not realy any scales near buy where i'am loading. I run scales on my truck and trailer they work good but there not 100% accurate unless 100% on level ground. I have an overweight permit for every state but CT because they do not issue them and believe it or not they usually wont bother me unless i'am 1,000lbs or more over.

Logan, I drive for a food waste processing company and am in the same situation .
Many times dont know what the trailer or box weighs until we get it back to the shop and hit the scale. No scales at the customer or near by and no bill of lading with weights. We can monitor the trailers and compactors via the computer but many times someone at the customer hits a reset button so we dont always get a accurate weight.
Its easy for guys who havent been in our situtation to tells us not to run it, dump some off, put scales on board, whatever else.
It doesnt do any good to stop at the truckstop and scale it because if its over theres no place to unload the extra weight other than a landfill which still doesnt help because we run 24/7.
Luckily its not a daily thing and have been working at keeping overweights down and the company has no problem paying out the money when a driver does get one, along with the fact that there are no CSA points for overwights. -
im not even sure what does get you points anymore. i had a safety meeting a few weeks ago, normal thing i didnt crash or nothing, and my csa was still at 0. but i had gotten put out of service in ca a few months before and i could swear that would have gotten me something. the way everyone was talking i was thinking like i would get points just for sneezing on the scale.

I have no idea what does or doesn't get you points either--and there is a ton of misinformation out there--but I'm gonna say that Con-Way safety director probably is much more up on all this than me--and I know you can only get points--if there is an inspection form filled out--so I guess if they just do the weight thing and do not inspect than it wouldn't matter anyway--but seems like anytime I did get yanked over--I always got at least a driver DOT inspection--so maybe you could check back with safety and let us know--or Dieselbear if your lurking--let us know--Thanx

I deal with these tickets all the time as well, I haul containers, and overweights are a hazard in this game. At last check my MVR was 2 pages long, 5 of those are tickets that are more than 4 yrs old, but there is also 7 overweights. My company also pays them and back charges the shipper 2x the amount. I've had them as little as a 500 lbs overweight (80,500) and as much as 15,000 lbs over becuase of stupidity.
Since I'm also dealing with intermediaries, railroads and steamship lines, you would think they would catch these, but they don't and they don't care either. -
Oh and it's $513 for all eastern counties. -
I'm glad it doesn't carry any CSA points, that takes all worry away from me. My truck is in tip top shape inspection wise.

I was studying the codes here in South Dakota to fight an overweight ticket and discovered that after your fouth ticket in a given area they take the plates off the truck for a year. I asked the states attorney what the time frame was and she said three years. So it looks like four overwieght tickets in a three year period and you lose your plates in SD. DOT did tell me that overweight didn't go against csa score.
