My total hospital, (NOT Doctors) , just hospital bill is right at 40K.
My insurer (Aetna) paid 10K.
I was billed 1K as my share, which I paid.
And the bill now says, paid in full.
Is this the NEW math, or what., ???
I understand that I could call and have it explained, but If they screwed up---I don't want to bring it to their notice.
Or do I just not understand hospital billing ?????

The rest is most likely a "contractual write off" based on the contract between the provider and the ins company. I know that its really confusing. Does your Explanation of Benefits from the insurance company show a contractual write off? They may be using some other terminology for that portion, but your EOB should show exactly what was billed, paid and what you owe.

The hospital has a agreement as to reimbursement from the insurance company for a pre-determined amount for each service, plus your deductible amount. The rest is a markdown for the hospital. The total bill is what you would pay if you were one of the many people without health insurance.
