I booked a load with a new (1 yo MC) broker and it bit me in the ### yet again. Said load is generators, 43k lbs 40’x8’5”x9’5”, for a step deck, got the rate confirmation, all good, I even confirmed on the phone like I always do, if it’s a legal dimensions load.

They booked a crane, I arrived at the pick up, several pieces scattered around, some too large for me, some would fit. Nobody there, they said crane was coming. I asked for a list of items I’m supposed to load. They sent one and turned out they wanted me to load a CAT 3520C generator (which by itself is fine dimension-wise), but also some pipes and parts and a framed radiator which was 170x128x116. Permitable, but I’m not registered for oversize in any but one of the states it was going through and it was Friday close to noon.

I offered to take a legal load as I booked and they can do whatever they want with the oversize, I was not taking it, they said all the pieces had to go otherwise half the price for transport.

I said good luck. I can’t believe they thought they would just bully me into taking an oversized load. Who would do that?

So they lost the truck, they had to pay the crane (if they even did), the shipper never showed up, crane guy (who showed up and set up in the meantime) said he didn’t know why - shipper was supposed to be paying him.

I didn’t even consider trying to work this out once they said half the price if I don’t take oversize piece. Not what I booked and I don’t let people talk to me like that. I didn’t even ask for TONU, didn’t feel like it was worth my time trying to milk a rock and it was Friday by noon already - I had to book something else now.

I don’t even know how much that radiator could weigh, the generator itself was 38k lbs, to me it looked like good few thousand pounds at bare minimum if not over 10k. I can only carry 46k anyways.

I was once a new carrier and felt it was unfair brokers didn’t want to work with me than, but for all the times I had to deal with stuff like that I think it’s time to say no to anyone without established reputation.

U did the right thing. Sucks it was Friday. If I was in a mood, I would have loaded the generator and left. You wanna come at me for half the rate con? By all means. Your broker bond is gonna take a hit.

Good on you for bailing on that. Sucks that you lost your Friday, but as much as I hate it when carriers don't really consider what goes into hauling OS/OW (and that's bit me in the ### a couple of times over the years), brokerages and customers doing this to you guys can get F'd too. That's patently absurd.
