unexpected terrain/route....

I'm not sure why you were using your brakes at all, but I'm guessing inexperience is a factor so I'll say this.

THEIR IS NO EXCUSE TO BE USING YOUR BRAKES GOING DOWN GRADES UNDER NORMAL OPERATIONS! I went up and down HWY-22 going into Jackson Hole Wyoming at 78k which that section of road is only legal for trucks under 60k.

5 miles of 10% grade with switchbacks all the way down and I didn't touch my brakes once. You need to work on picking the right gears before you get yourself and/or someone else killed. It's not difficult and it doesn't take much experience, but failure to do so will result in some serious ####.

 

Umm, excuse me but.. you broke the law?

Lol, wy ports of entry. I didn't leave the state since the last Poe and I'd have to leave before I can enter again.

They have a FAQ on their website about stopping at the Poe. You don't want to know.

 

I've driven Wyo 270, don't know that I would want to run that with a heavy load like that in a box trailer, bit of a rough road.

The only scales he should have hit on the drive was Cheyenne and Torrington, all other are bypassed, and if he did it correctly, he wouldn't even have to stop at Cheyenne. If you're coming NB on 25 into Wyo., take the exit for the Rest Area, go straight North, come out behind the J and get right back on 25 NB. The port knows people are doing it, but as of yet, they haven't started monitoring it, think it's because 90% of drivers don't know about it. Also, Torrington and Lusk are only open 7am to 7 pm.

Although, few times we've picked up in Belle Fourche, they have setup a portable. That canyon coming into Lead is no fun if there is snow on the ground.

 

270 isn't bad from 18 to 85 as they just reworked it last year. Sundance has a sign up telling you your supposed to stop when you come into town on 585 but most treat it like Gillette and just drive past.

 

Haven't been out that way in a while, but there used to be a weight limit on 270. There's a sign on 85 southbound saying "270 restricted xx miles ahead. "

 

No weight limit that I can remember since they finished the construction. I think most of that was to get you into that Lusk scale.

I just did this in reverse. Was in logan headed back to Denver. Picked up my cheese and figured go up 89 to meet with US 30. I got UT30 and US30 confused a bit
it's a 6 mile 8% grade downhill into bear lake. And a hell of a climb up to it up a twisting turning canyon.

On the plus side it knocked like 30 miles off the trip.

 

It may knock off thirty miles, but adds a lot more time and fuel. I learned a lesson on that load and always consider easier and faster alternate routes when trip planning.
