Rules of dispatch could work better for you at union unless they are using the "....HOGBOARD....", then it would take 5 to 10 years before it worked better for you.

If you are a trouble maker or a slacker the union will protect you however if you are a good worker then you are stuck working with unhappy trouble makers or slackers.

non Union companies don't care. Where you get in trouble is working Union then going nonunion, you become what they call a scab and you'll never do Union again. You have to leave the Union to work nonunion in your trade as well or they can potentially sue you and/or kick you out of their little club. I worked construction for 10 years, about half Union and half not. Found the nonunion side to be much more enjoyable and profitable in that industry. Union boys were too busy ratting people out and screwing stuff up to get any work done

 

That's true. It's better to take care of you own retirement plan. Much of the missing union retirement money went to Democratic politicians re-election campaign funds.

When you sign this you're signing a contract with them, note the bottom line "I will at all times bear true and faithful allegiance"
You get caught driving for a non Union company and you are in violation. Depending on the circumstances they can press charges and sue for breach of contract. Good luck getting back into the union if this occurs... It ain't happening.
Keep in mind, the union is a business. You pay them every month for their services. As with any business, it's all about the $$$.

 

Article XIX section 8 paragraph 3. You owe them everything you made when not working under them. Can't pay it, to court you go.
Now if you want to go do some carpentry while you're a teamster, no problem.

 

With all due respect, this is a false statement. I've taken a withdrawal card on a couple different occasions to work at a non union job. When I returned to a union shop the initiation fee was waived.

Also, to the specific article you cited, I'd like to see an "unfair list" as specified. Also, I'm unsure if it's referring to individuals that are on strike.

And you're absolutely correct, the Teamsters Union is a business. A big one.

 

With the withdrawal card, following correct procedure you can but correct me if I'm wrong, you're no longer part of the union once you do that. You temporarily withdrew your membership it just leaves the door open for you to come back.
I haven't looked for an unfair list and from my experience with unions that section applies 100% of the time, strike or not. (I used to be with UA. Left after getting screwed over several times)

And don't take me wrong, I'm not trying to start a union/nonunion pissing contest. I believe back in the day they were great things. They aren't what they used to be tho and I decided it wasn't for me.

 

The Teamsters are not a hiring hall like the trades of Electrical, Plumbing etc. There the union sends the employee to the company employer. The Teamsters can ask a certain company to hire a member looking for work, or in the Master Freight Agreement the companies are supposed to hire first off a list of laid off members before hiring off the street. After being hired, you will be required to join the Union after a certain time period, like 30 days or so. The Union meets with the company to negotiate work rules, senority issues and such. Any problems you have should be addressed to the Union Steward which along with the Business Agent is your voice to deal with issues. Get to know the BA and the Union Steward. When joining the Teamsters, every member has the right for a copy of the Constitution of the Teamsters. Call Washington DC and they will send one to you. Everything is identified by your Social Security Number.
