Sounds exactly like the UA of plumbers pipefitters and welders. You work for the company, under the unions agreement with them. If they hire new people they're supposed to pull from the unions reserve of workers who aren't currently working before pulling in new hires that then have to join the union to stay employed as they move up the ladder.

So what is an unfair list, what does that mean? A list of companies that they choose and you can't ever work for them? Or does it mean you can't work for them only while you're a member?

As a Union Steward I make an attempt to educate every new hire on our practices, particularly if they've never worked under a CBA. Getting involved is highly encouraged.

    Excellent post.

Ok so basically a non union company could care less if I was union before or not. But the union would care if I left, went to some non union job, then later tried to get back in the union. Got it.

Pretty much. As pintlehook stated, you can get a withdrawal from the union to go work that job. Essentially you have to get their permission/approval first. He can probably tell you more about that than I can. But a company not affiliated with the union doesn't care.

The Union ...Non Union stuff is a discussion that is in the Political Forums here. It is very easy to get upset with the discussion.

I am a Conservative Republican and I am radical Pro Union. Truck Drivers are way to independent for it to work in our industry so you have to decide for yourself if it is worth it for you to join.

As for going back and forth between Union and Non Union Jobs. Ask your shop steward. The with drawl card will keep you from having to pay dues while you are working elsewhere.

I was working delivering Pizza once and there was a picket line in front of the Ford Claycomo Jack Cooper Transportation lot. I refused to cross the line. The strikers bought the pizza and I was tipped $200. My boss fired me. The pizza place had the best pizza in Kansas City. It is now out of business.

Unions are just folks trying to act together to get a fair wage.

I really don't see that being a problem. I also don't see you leaving most Union jobs for a non Union one. You'd almost certainly be loosing money and benefits if you did.

there's plenty of non-union companies offering the same pay or more as well as benefits that in all reality are just as good or some cases better than the union.
