I have read EVERY page of Every forum about them. Most people bash companies because they weren't very good employees. I was looking for information regarding time away from home and benifits offered. I don't care what some pissed off employee with a grudge has to say.

As with any car haul company, you are going to get different results from different terminals. United Road has had some turnover in senior management, but the guys I load next to in New York seem happy and have been the same faces for a while now. I can't answer you specific hometime questions, never worked for United Road. You may want to take some time on you day off and head to a spot near the yard and try to catch one of their drivers.

If nothing else, it will get you the training and experience you need to enter the car haul world and maybe step into a better gig at one of the union companies. Marysville should keep you busy enough, and with a little time you should be back to making what you are used to making now. Good luck.

I left a good paying job about 5 years ago to get into carhaul for various reasons. The biggest reason was because I had always looked at carhauler's going down the road and I thought I would like to do that. Fast forward 5 years and I am a carhaul owner op. I love my job, my schedule, my rig, my home time, my income and on and on and on. It sucked at first. I also spoke with United Road before Jack Cooper called. The 2 weeks out is what they told me and it just wasn't for me. I need to be home every weekend. That said they seem to run a good company from the interactions I have had with their drivers. You probably will like car hauling, but probably not at the beginning.

Gentlemen thank you for the responses. Like I said in the opening post I am making #### good money but the money isn't motivating me anymore. What good is it when 75% of your waking hours are at work? My major concerns with United was I didn't want to jump at the first thing that comes along. I have other applications out and didn't want to sell my self short. Got an email back from the terminal manager and was hoping the overall package, wages/benifits/vacation time, were a little better. But have been told training is training. Get in the door learn what I am doing and then move to greener grasses. But at 43 can't say I am really into to that.

Banker talking about learning the trade then buying a truck sounds like a possible path but having owned a truck before most of my days off were spent making sure the truck was ready to go. Can't imagine how much more responsibility the car trailer and the maintence of the hydraulics would be. Having run pumps for concrete companies the hydraulics are a constant priority. Doesn't sound like a relaxing weekend at home. I guess if you stay up on your preventative maintence that would cut a lot of what ifs out.

    Thanks again for the info.

I wasn't trying to steer you towards or away from being an owner op. I was trying to prepare you for a possible pay cut and harder job that you may hate initially. But if you can and will hang in there it should be a pay raise and a job you will most likely enjoy, but only after you master it. Good luck!
